my very first comic. click to view the slideshow
I submitted an entry to the 2nd Philippine Graphic Fiction Awards last year. It was a collaboration with Friends — Dustine provided the story concept, Red and Tin printed and submitted the entry in Manila, and I drew the thing, so credit goes to all of them. Special credit goes to PJ who went out of his way to help, in case Red and Tin didn’t weren’t able to. I promised him part of the award money ^____^
I messed up with the framing and the flow (frames are cramped in some places and the plot skips once in a while) but regardless of that it’s a major achievement for me. It’s the first comic I actually finished, and I proved to myself that on some level I am able to put a story to ink and paper. A friend of mine back in college once said I shouldn’t waste my character sketches; that I should put them in a story and share them with people. This is the first opportunity I’ve got to do that, and I’m glad. =)
Since this comic I’ve upgraded the character design so that it’s easier to distinguish between guys and girls and between characters, which is good because a necktie really isn’t enough of a distinguishing feature. They have hair now, and clothes, and I can get them to use a computer, throw shuriken and sing Bed Of Roses. I’ll put them up some time.
I want to start a web comic soon. Nothing really funny, nor too serious. I just want to put some thoughts out there from the mouths of my characters, which can be figurative since some of them have no mouths. And not just thoughts. Emotions too. I want them to smile, to be funny, to cry, to fall in love, be jaded, be cynical, and to fall in love again. I want them to be me, in one way or another, which on many levels is flawed and imperfect. But then, aren’t we all?
Wish me luck, people. Ganbarimasu.
